Secret Places

That one special place in the Swiss mountains, on an isolated Greek island or along the French coast. My favorite tables in Paris, Londen or Berlin or the one-and-only room in that always fully booked hotel. Because I travel a lot for work, it happens that I end up in places I don’t want to tell anybody about. There just to good to be true. So…, well…, just for you then. Book and go but please, don’t tell….

Tonnaro di Scopello, Trapani

Tonnara di Scopello lies in a bay between the rocks down that bumpy road. It’s one of those dilapidated tuna fisheries we once had so many of stretched along the Sicilian coast, most gone by now, converted into luxury hotels. But this one managed to escape. The place is totally enchanting and also totally hidden, the villa not visible from the sea standing as it does behind the rocks stabbing wildly up from the waters. When a friend asked whether I knew of a place she could stay for a couple of nights near Trapani I hesitated, then gave her the name. I thought it must have been discovered and built up by now. An hour after she arrived, however, I get a text: ‘Most beautiful place I’ve ever seen!’ It had survived.
